Snake handler captures reptiles in residential areas of Cyprus
Snake handler Giannis Angeli was recently called to residential locations in Cyprus to capture snakes found near homes. In one instance, a young Dolichophis jugularis, known locally as a 'saitta' or 'therko', was removed from a doorway. Another incident involved the removal of a large snake found hiding in a warehouse in Polemidia. While reports vary on the specific type of snake, the handler clarified that these species are generally not dangerous to humans despite their size. 'Therko' snakes can grow up to three meters in length and are considered beneficial to agriculture as they prey on rodents. Experts advise citizens to remain calm if they encounter a snake, avoid contact, and keep a safe distance. To prevent encounters during summer months, it is recommended to wear protective clothing such as long pants and boots when walking in nature. Additionally, using a walking stick to clear brush in advance helps alert snakes to human presence through ground vibrations.
