Cyprus sends firefighting aircraft to assist France with wildfires
Wildfires fueled by high temperatures and strong winds are currently burning forests in southern France. Approximately 700 firefighters, supported by aviation, are working to contain the spreading flames. Due to the dangerous conditions, French authorities have conducted evacuations in affected areas. In response to a formal request from France, the Republic of Cyprus is deploying two firefighting aircraft. These planes are provided through the European Union's RescEU civil protection mechanism. According to the Cypriot Ministry of Interior, the aircraft were leased by Cyprus using EU funds and are typically stationed in Paphos. The RescEU program is designed to support EU member states during major natural disasters. This collaborative effort aims to bolster the local French response capabilities.
