FIFA disciplinary suspension for Folarin Balogun amid political controversy
Following a direct red card received during a round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, United States forward Folarin Balogun was initially ruled out of the round of 16 game against Belgium. U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed he contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of the decision, describing the refereeing as questionable. Subsequently, FIFA's disciplinary committee suspended the automatic one-match ban, allowing Balogun to participate in the upcoming match. This intervention sparked criticism from the Belgian Football Association and UEFA, both of which challenged the legality of the decision. While the Belgian side threatened further legal action, FIFA maintained that its disciplinary bodies operate with full independence. FIFA, supported by the Brazilian Football Confederation, also defended the integrity of Brazilian referee Raphael Claus, who oversaw the initial match. Gianni Infantino emphasized that while he maintains regular contact with the U.S. President, all judicial decisions remain the sole responsibility of the organization's independent committees.
