Trial for the Tempi train disaster continues in Larissa
The trial regarding the Tempi train disaster continues on Monday, July 6, at the Three-Member Court of Appeal in Larissa. The court is expected to appoint a state-funded lawyer for one of the 36 defendants, who requested a new counsel due to financial hardship. Currently, the court is reviewing submissions from legal representatives supporting the indictment, including requests to upgrade existing charges and call additional witnesses. The prosecutor has reserved her decision on upgrading charges of negligent homicide to potential malice homicide, as well as initiating prosecutions for exposure, causing an explosion, and endangering transport safety against two Hellenic Train executives currently charged only with misdemeanors. She cited that charges cannot be brought for acts for which defendants did not testify during the main investigation. Furthermore, the prosecutor reserved judgment on calling new witnesses until the evidentiary stage begins. However, she recommended the rejection of requests for supplementary investigation, cancellation of the indictment, and dismissal of the case based on article 324.
