Technical difficulties following the transition to DVB-T2 digital television in Cyprus
Viewers in Cyprus are experiencing signal reception issues following the transition to the new HELLAS SAT DVB-T2 digital broadcasting platform. The Department of Electronic Communications (DEC) notes that many issues can be resolved by users through a manual retuning of their television sets. Older devices that do not support the DVB-T2 standard require an external decoder, which can be purchased from local suppliers. Technical expert Giannis Artemiou reported approximately 1,500 initial fault reports, with numbers decreasing as issues are addressed. Investigations by the DEC and technicians indicate that problems are often caused by poor internal household wiring, improper receiver region settings—particularly for devices imported from Greece—or marginal signal reception affected by atmospheric conditions. The DEC has dismissed claims that the issues stem from a faulty antenna system. HELLAS SAT operates a support call center at 22000737, available daily until 21:00, and has pledged to follow up on missed calls. Authorities emphasize that the provider is working to fully restore signal coverage for all affected households.
