Cyprus addresses digital television transition issues
On July 1, Cyprus transitioned its terrestrial digital television network to the DVB-T2 standard operated by Hellas Sat. This migration replaced the previous Velister system, aiming to introduce high-definition (HD) broadcasting across the country. Following reports of signal loss and technical issues, the Department of Electronic Communications issued official guidelines five days post-transition. Officials stated that a three-month period of parallel transmission and a public awareness campaign preceded the switch. Reports emerged alleging that some third-party technicians exploited the confusion by charging citizens for unnecessary services. The Ministry is currently monitoring the situation and coordinating with Hellas Sat to ensure full service restoration for all affected viewers. The government maintains that the upgrade was necessary due to the expiration of the previous provider's license and the need to modernize Cyprus's broadcasting infrastructure.
