Tufan Erhurman comments on extradition of real estate agent from France
A Lithuanian real estate agent has been arrested in France following a European arrest warrant issued by the Republic of Cyprus, with a French court ruling in favor of her extradition. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman criticized the action, arguing that property disputes in Cyprus cannot be resolved through individual lawsuits but must be handled as part of a comprehensive political solution. Erhurman claimed that the Greek Cypriot leadership is weaponizing legal proceedings to pressure the Turkish Cypriot side. He defended the existing 'Immovable Property Commission' as the appropriate mechanism for restitution, exchange, or compensation of properties. The Turkish Cypriot side continues to advocate for a solution mediated by the UN Secretary-General. Meanwhile, the authorities in the self-proclaimed state issued a statement condemning the use of legal tools for political leverage. Both sides maintain diverging views on whether property issues should be settled in international courts or through internal political negotiation.
