Metallic objects found on North Queensland beach identified as potential space debris
The Australian Space Agency is investigating at least six metallic spheres discovered on Forrest Beach, north of Townsville in North Queensland, between Friday and Sunday. Authorities established a 50-meter exclusion zone around each object to manage potential safety risks. Initial assessments suggest these items are pressure tanks, likely manufactured from titanium alloys, which typically survive atmospheric reentry. Experts, including Associate Professor Alice Gorman, identified them as common space debris known as space balls. Police and fire services have collected the objects in specialized containers for hazardous materials, as there are concerns they might contain toxic or reactive chemical residues. The Australian government is currently working with international partners to determine the exact origin and the specific nation responsible for the launch. Previous instances of space debris found in Australia include a large metal dome in Western Australia in 2023, which was confirmed to be part of an Indian rocket. Officials have advised the public not to touch such objects and to report any sightings to emergency services immediately.
