EAC trade unions suspend strike action following government talks
Trade unions at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) have officially suspended strike measures originally scheduled for July 9, 2026. This decision followed a constructive meeting held at the Presidential Palace on July 7, attended by Energy Minister Michalis Damianos, Deputy Minister to the President Irene Piki, EAC Chairman Giorgos Petrou, and representatives from the four EAC unions: EPOPAH, SIDHKEK, SEPAHK, and SYBAHK. The discussions focused on critical energy sector issues, specifically electricity supply adequacy through 2029 and the rising costs for consumers. Unions emphasized that they are seeking solutions to technical challenges and the recovery of significant investments in infrastructure, such as the facilities at Vasiliko and Dhekelia. Government officials were granted a 15-day period to consult with relevant ministries and address the concerns raised. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for July 22, 2026, to evaluate progress and determine potential future actions by the labor organizations.
