Developments in the Mafia State investigation and the appointment of independent criminal investigators

The Cypriot Council of Ministers is scheduled to finalize the composition of a team of criminal investigators this Wednesday to examine the Anti-Corruption Authority’s report on the 'Mafia State' case. Government Spokesman Constantinos Letymbiotis confirmed that facilities and support staff for the team are ready. The government plans to appoint Ilias Anagnostopoulos to the team, a decision that has faced criticism due to his previous legal representation of Tal Dilian in a separate surveillance case. Letymbiotis rejected any link between the current investigation and the 'black van' surveillance case, stating that the latter falls outside the scope of the committee. Meanwhile, Lito Kariolou, lawyer for journalist Makarios Drousiotis, has expressed concerns regarding the impartiality of the appointments. She questioned the role of President Nikos Christodoulides in the selection process, citing potential conflicts of interest, and called for institutional changes to ensure the investigation's independence. Kariolou also emphasized the importance of confidentiality agreements used by previous inspectors to secure critical evidence.
