Prison riot leads to multiple casualties in Negombo, Sri Lanka
A violent clash between groups of prisoners occurred on Sunday evening at the Negombo prison, located 35 kilometers north of Colombo, Sri Lanka. The incident resulted in significant casualties, with reports varying between 23 and 25 deaths, including several prison guards. Approximately 100 people were hospitalized, with some victims suffering from gunshot wounds, lacerations, and severe bruising. The riot involved inmates at the facility, which houses several thousand people, and was described as the deadliest prison disturbance in the country in over five years. During the unrest, female inmates in an adjacent section climbed onto a roof, which subsequently collapsed, leading to further injuries. Security forces, including the police and air force, deployed drones and helicopters to monitor the perimeter as relatives of the inmates gathered outside. While military support was requested, the army remained on standby as authorities worked to restore order. The exact cause of the fighting remains under investigation.
