AKEL criticizes the appointment of new criminal investigators in the 'Mafia State' case
The political party AKEL has criticized the government following changes in the team of criminal investigators tasked with examining the Anti-Corruption Authority's report on the 'Mafia State' case. The replacement of investigator Andreas Mylonopoulos with Ilias Anagnostopoulos, following concerns regarding a conflict of interest, has not satisfied the party. AKEL noted that Anagnostopoulos previously represented Tal Dilian in a surveillance case in Greece, raising further questions about the process. The party maintains that the core issue remains the refusal of Attorney General Giorgos Savvides and Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelides to resign. Although both officials have recused themselves from the specific investigation, AKEL argues that their continued presence in their posts compromises the integrity of the process. Furthermore, AKEL blames President Nikos Christodoulides for failing to ensure an investigation above reproach, suggesting a potential cover-up of findings related to former President Nikos Anastasiadis. Lawyer Achilleas Demetriades has also commented that the investigation is incomplete without an independent prosecutor.
