Political dispute over investigation into the 'Mafia State' case
The appointment of criminal investigators to probe the 'Mafia State' case has triggered a political confrontation between the AKEL party and the Cypriot government. The controversy intensified following the resignation of investigator Andreas Mylonopoulos due to conflict of interest concerns and his subsequent replacement by Ilias Anagnostopoulos. AKEL argues that the new appointment fails to resolve credibility issues, noting that Anagnostopoulos previously represented Tal Dilian in an illegal surveillance case in Greece. Furthermore, the party contends that the refusal of the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General, both former ministers under Nicos Anastasiades, to resign undermines the integrity of the process. President Nicos Christodoulides is accused by AKEL of fostering a potential cover-up involving his political mentor, Nicos Anastasiades. In response, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis condemned AKEL for politicizing a sensitive judicial procedure and attempting to prejudice the outcome of an independent investigation. The government maintains that the process must proceed without interference, defending the professionalism of the legal experts involved.
