Trial continues regarding the death of Stylianos Constantinou

The Nicosia District Court is hearing a case regarding the 2019 suicide of 14-year-old Stylianos Constantinou. Eleven people, including the boy's parents and nine social workers, are on trial. During recent proceedings, a witness identified as S.K., who served as a liaison officer in 2010-2011, testified that there was sufficient evidence for the Social Welfare Services to seek a court order to remove the child from his family environment. S.K. referenced a report from April 7, 2011, which detailed reports of neglect and living conditions reported by the boy’s teacher. Defense attorneys questioned the witness, arguing that children or adults can exaggerate claims. The witness acknowledged this possibility but insisted that the boy’s state of neglect went beyond isolated incidents and that systemic intervention was warranted. The court continues to evaluate evidence to determine if the social workers' actions were negligent.
