UN Secretary-General reports on progress and challenges in Cyprus
In his latest report on his Good Offices mission, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres acknowledged the intensified dialogue between President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. Guterres described the increased interaction as a positive development, indicating a shared commitment to building trust. He welcomed the agreement to establish a consultative body involving civil society as a significant step toward a more inclusive peace process. However, the Secretary-General warned that this window of opportunity should not be taken for granted and that a durable solution remains uncertain. A major concern highlighted in the report is the failure to implement confidence-building measures agreed upon in March and July 2025. These include the pending opening of additional crossing points, which Guterres noted would improve daily life and demonstrate necessary political will. The report emphasizes that without concrete actions on these initiatives and the resumption of substantive negotiations, meaningful progress may remain elusive.
