Kourion municipality to hold public meeting regarding British Base antenna expansion

The Municipality of Kourion has announced a public meeting scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 7:00 PM at the Akrotiri Primary School multipurpose hall. The meeting aims to inform residents and decide on collective actions regarding the British Bases' plans to install additional antennas in the area. Mayor Pantelis Georgiou has characterized the issue as critical, noting that approximately 110 of the 115 square kilometers of the British Bases are located within the municipal boundaries. The mayor stated that the municipality is initiating legal action against the expansion project. He urged the central government to support the local authority's efforts, stating that the municipality is prepared to act independently if necessary. The mayor also referenced a past drone crash in March as part of the broader concerns regarding base activities. Local officials and the Limassol Chamber of Commerce have previously discussed the matter as a significant challenge for the entire region.
