Mavridis files complaint regarding event with representatives from occupied Cyprus
Member of the European Parliament Kostas Mavridis has lodged a formal complaint regarding an event held at the European Parliament on June 24, 2026. The event was hosted by MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk and featured individuals identified as mayors from the breakaway entity in the northern occupied territories of the Republic of Cyprus. In his address to Parliament President Roberta Metsola, Mavridis argued that the presence and official recognition of these figures as mayors violate both European Union and international law. He stated that such actions undermine the established legal position of the European Union regarding the status of the island. Mavridis claimed that this is not the first time Ilhan Kyuchyuk has facilitated similar initiatives. He has requested that President Metsola implement immediate measures to prevent future occurrences of this nature. The complainant emphasized that activities within the European Parliament must remain consistent with international legal standards and the union's binding commitments.
