Environmental restoration project announced for Akrotiri wetlands

BirdLife Cyprus has announced a restoration project for the Akrotiri wetlands, scheduled to begin in September. The initiative is funded by two private sector donors. The project aims to address environmental degradation and eutrophication caused by unplanned developments in the area. The first action involves restoring Makria Lake, also known as Zakaki Lake, where excessive vegetation has obstructed the habitat and bird-watching facilities. The second action includes creating artificial islands in the Lady's Mile area to improve nesting conditions for key bird species. The Game and Fauna Service of the Republic of Cyprus and the British Bases Environment Department have been informed of the plans. Future consultations are planned with the Kouris Municipality and the Limassol EOA to ensure stakeholder coordination. Current pollution levels at Makria Lake are reportedly harming local bird populations by reducing their food sources and nesting suitability.
