Cyprus to launch AI traffic camera pilot program in Nicosia
Cyprus is launching a pilot program using AI-powered traffic cameras to identify drivers distracted by mobile phone use. The cameras will be installed on Griva Digeni Avenue in the Engomi area of Nicosia, replacing currently non-functional equipment. The system uses algorithms to detect if a driver’s hands are off the steering wheel or if they are holding a mobile phone. Following detection, a human operator will review the footage to verify the violation before any action is taken. During the initial pilot phase, the system will not result in fines or fixed penalty notices as authorities evaluate accuracy. Future enforcement requires legislative amendments to integrate mobile phone use and seatbelt violations into the current automated traffic system. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades emphasized the risks of distraction, noting that mobile phone use is a leading cause of fatal road accidents in Cyprus. If successful, the pilot program will be expanded to additional locations across the country.
