Cyprus to pilot AI-powered traffic cameras on Griva Digeni Avenue

Cyprus Traffic Police are set to install the first two AI-powered traffic cameras on Griva Digeni Avenue in Nicosia, specifically in the Engomi area. These units will replace existing non-functional cameras and cover traffic in both directions. Unlike standard cameras that detect speed or traffic signal violations, these AI devices will exclusively monitor for mobile phone use while driving. An algorithm will analyze whether a driver's hands are off the steering wheel to identify potential violations. If the system detects a phone, the footage will be reviewed by a human officer before a fine is issued. This measure will initially be implemented as a pilot program with plans for future expansion to other urban centers. According to the Traffic Police, mobile phone use and driver distraction contribute to approximately half of all road fatalities in Cyprus. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades recently highlighted the dangers of using mobile devices behind the wheel, noting that some drivers even watch videos while operating vehicles.
