Athletics coach in Kefalonia remanded in custody over sexual abuse allegations
An athletics coach in Kefalonia has been remanded in custody following accusations of sexual harassment and physical abuse of minor female athletes. The investigation began in December 2025 after a mother contacted the 'Hamogelo tou Paidiou' (Smile of the Child) organization via the SOS 1056 helpline. According to the organization, the mother had initially contacted the Prosecutor's Office but chose not to file a formal complaint at that time because she did not want to identify herself, seeking to protect the privacy of the minors involved. Following the intervention of the organization, she proceeded with an anonymous report to the Kefalonia Police Department. The report included allegations of physical violence and derogatory verbal comments made by the coach during training sessions. Authorities have identified at least four victims in connection with the case. Following his arrest and a lengthy apology before a judge, the coach was ordered to remain in custody. The investigation is ongoing as authorities collect further testimonies to determine if there are additional victims or further criminal liabilities.
