Energy minister confirms deadline for Vassiliko terminal completion

Cyprus Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry George Papanastasiou, referred to as Michalis Damianou in recent reports, stated that the completion of the Vassiliko natural gas terminal is essential for electricity supply by 2030. The terminal project is reportedly between 40% and 60% complete according to Technip reports. EU regulations require the decommissioning of polluting generators at Dhekelia by the end of 2029, necessitating a transition to natural gas. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has purchased three new generators, with two arriving in 2028 and one in 2029, though these will have smaller capacities than the ones being replaced. The government plans to launch a new tender process in 2026 to appoint a contractor and finalize the infrastructure before 2030. Officials dismissed alternative interim solutions, citing legal requirements and time constraints. A new Board of Directors has been appointed for DEFA to oversee the progress of ETYFA.
