Sewage discharge from Pyla residential complex poses public health risk in Oroklini
Residents and local officials report that sewage from a large residential complex in Pyla is flowing into a stormwater canal in the Oroklini coastal area. The discharge reportedly intensifies during summer months, leading to a strong odor and creating potential health hazards near the former 'Chryso Psari' restaurant location. Oroklini Deputy Mayor Neofytos Fakontis confirmed the issue, noting that Pyla lacks a formal sewerage system, causing waste pits to overflow into the canal. Despite numerous complaints lodged with authorities, no remedial actions or fines have been issued to date. Representatives from the Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) and the Department of Environment inspected the site but have yet to intervene. Furthermore, experts from the Democritus University of Thrace, hired by the Larnaca Municipality for stormwater management, identified the residential complex as a primary source of the sewage influx. Local officials continue to press the DLGO and relevant government bodies for a permanent resolution to the contamination.
