European Parliament approves €144.1 million aid for natural disasters in 2025

The European Parliament has approved a funding package of €144.1 million from the European Union Solidarity Fund to support Cyprus, Spain, and Romania following natural disasters in 2025. The measure was passed with 642 votes in favor, 13 against, and one abstention. Spain will receive €120.55 million for damages caused by severe drought, heatwaves, and wildfires, particularly those in August 2025, which led to eight fatalities. Romania is allocated €14.34 million to address the aftermath of flooding that occurred between late May and early June 2025. Cyprus will receive €9.21 million following July 2025 wildfires in the Limassol and Paphos regions that resulted in two deaths, the destruction of approximately 900 properties, and disruptions to essential public services. Spain and Cyprus have already received advance payments of €30 million and €2.3 million, respectively. The funds are intended for emergency response, infrastructure restoration, cleanup, and temporary housing. Cyprus reported total direct damages estimated at €252.68 million.
