European Parliament approves €144.1 million in disaster relief for Cyprus, Spain, and Romania
The European Parliament has approved a €144.1 million aid package from the EU Solidarity Fund to support three member states following natural disasters in 2025. The funding allocation passed with 642 votes in favor, 13 against, and one abstention. Cyprus will receive €9.21 million to address damages caused by July 2025 wildfires in the Limassol and Paphos districts, which resulted in two deaths, the destruction of nearly 900 properties, and the displacement of thousands of residents. Cyprus has already received an initial advance payment of €2.3 million. Spain is set to receive €120.55 million to recover from severe wildfires and heatwaves, having already received a €30 million advance. Romania will receive €14.34 million to mitigate damage from significant flooding in May and June 2025. The funds are designated for emergency recovery measures, including the restoration of infrastructure, provision of temporary shelter, and public service cleanup.
