European Parliament initiates investigation into ESN political party

The European Parliament has voted to initiate an investigation into the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) political party to determine its compliance with European Union values, including democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. The measure passed with 414 votes in favor, 224 against, and 18 abstentions. The investigation is led by the Authority for European Political Parties and European Political Foundations (APPF), marking the first time this mechanism has been triggered. The inquiry follows an APPF report citing problematic public statements and social media posts by ESN members, including anti-migrant rhetoric and comparisons between homosexuality and pedophilia. If the ESN is found in violation of EU values, it could face a suspension of its European funding. ESN President Stanislav Stoyanov has rejected the allegations, stating that the group remains committed to democratic principles and the sovereignty of nations. The investigation focuses specifically on the ESN party, rather than the corresponding parliamentary group, which includes the German AfD and Sarah Knafo.
