Minister of Justice to propose reduction of security details for state officials

Minister of Justice Costas Fytiris is expected to submit a formal proposal to the Council of Ministers next week regarding the reorganization of security details for political leaders and current or former state officials. The initiative follows an investigation by a special police committee. Minister Fytiris has already initiated personal changes by requesting that the 24-hour physical security guard at his residence be replaced with an automated smart camera security system. The core of the proposal aims to replace static guards with modern technological solutions, arguing that many current assignments are unjustified. The minister suggested that numerous police officers currently acting as drivers or personal assistants could be redeployed to frontline duties. The plan covers protection for various high-profile figures, including current and former officials like Nicos Anastasiades, Marios Hartsiotis, Fidias Panayiotou, Odysseas Michaelides, Demetris Syllouris, and Yiannakis Omirou. The success of this initiative depends on whether the Council of Ministers, led by President Nicos Christodoulides, demonstrates the political will to implement these cuts.
