ICE officer kills Mexican national during traffic stop in Houston
On July 7, 2026, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed a Mexican national identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during a targeted enforcement operation in Houston, Texas. The incident occurred near the intersection of Canal Street and Wayside Drive shortly before 7 a.m. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the victim was in the country illegally and attempted to evade arrest. DHS officials allege that Araujo hit an ICE vehicle, ignored verbal commands, and used his car to attempt to strike an agent. The officer reportedly opened fire in self-defense, and Araujo later died at a local hospital. Two separate investigations are underway, conducted by the DHS and the FBI. Reports indicate the FBI is investigating the event as an assault on a federal officer rather than the death of the civilian.
