Department of Labour Inspection issues guidance on Legionella prevention
The Department of Labour Inspection has issued a reminder regarding the necessity of implementing preventative measures against Legionella during the summer months. The bacterium thrives in artificial water systems under conditions of water stagnation, improper temperature, and poor maintenance. Transmission occurs primarily through the inhalation of contaminated water aerosols, rather than person-to-person contact or drinking water consumption. High-risk areas identified include hospitals, hotels, elderly care facilities, and large residential buildings with extensive plumbing networks. Employers are specifically urged to maintain and sanitize cooling systems and water installations to mitigate infection risks. Household split-unit air conditioners are generally excluded from this risk as they do not store water. The department emphasized that the risk increases significantly when maintenance and cleaning protocols are neglected.
