Donald Trump announces suspension of trade with Spain over NATO disputes
During a NATO summit in Ankara, U.S. President Donald Trump described Spain as an unacceptable partner, citing the country's failure to meet defense spending requirements. Trump stated that Spain is the only NATO member that has not committed to increasing defense expenditures to 5% of its GDP by 2035. In the presence of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump announced that he has ordered U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to terminate all trade relations with Spain. He further discouraged travel to the country and characterized the Spanish government's contributions as inadequate. Additionally, Trump expressed dissatisfaction regarding NATO's stance on Greenland and signaled the end of a memorandum of understanding with Iran. He also discouraged any communication with Iranian representatives. While the U.S. president characterized Spain's actions as unfair, the remarks mark a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions within the alliance.
