Cyprus concludes its six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union
On July 8, 2026, the government of Cyprus held a press conference to present the results of its six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union. President Nikos Christodoulides, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, and Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna led the review. The government officials stated that the presidency successfully achieved concrete results for both the European Union and its citizens. Key accomplishments cited include the opening of the first negotiation clusters with Ukraine and Moldova and progress in accession talks with Montenegro, including preparations for an accession treaty. Furthermore, conditions were set for closing negotiation chapters with Albania. The presidency promoted the 'One Europe, One Market' roadmap to reduce single-market barriers and enhance business competitiveness. Cyprus also initiated negotiations for the next long-term EU budget by providing compromise proposals that served as a framework for member states. Finally, the implementation of the new Pact on Migration and Asylum, including efforts to increase the efficiency of migrant returns, remained a primary operational priority throughout the term.
