AKEL secretary general discusses UN secretary general's efforts on Cyprus issue
On Wednesday, AKEL Secretary General Stefanos Stefanou met with EU ambassadors to discuss ongoing efforts to restart negotiations for a resolution to the Cyprus issue. Stefanou stated that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is currently exploring the possibility of convening an informal, expanded meeting to break the long-standing stalemate. The UN proposal, according to Stefanou, involves presenting an outline of positions based on the six chapters of the Cyprus problem, similar to the framework used at the Crans-Montana talks. This structure includes four internal and two international chapters, incorporating established convergences and Guterres’s own approaches to outstanding issues. AKEL expressed its support for a results-oriented process completed in a short timeframe. However, the party officially reiterated its firm opposition to any NATO involvement in the resolution process. Stefanou emphasized that any viable solution must have the support of his party.
