Attorney General addresses parliamentary committee on case files and institutional reform
On Wednesday, Attorney General Giorgos Savvides informed the Parliamentary Legal Committee that the police investigation file concerning the 'Santi' case is currently under his review. The case involves allegations of false news, forgery, and the circulation of forged documents, with decisions on criminal prosecutions expected soon. During the session, the committee also discussed broader issues, including institutional reform and the potential separation of the Attorney General's powers. Tensions rose when addressing the 'Kratos Mafia' case. AKEL MP Andreas Pasiourtidis reiterated his party's demand for the resignation of the Attorney General and his deputy to restore public trust. Additionally, Pasiourtidis questioned the legal rationale behind the release of a prisoner known as 'Hamburger'. In his defense, Savvides stated that his role requires him to make decisions independent of public or political pressure, noting that the Legal Service often holds confidential evidence that cannot be disclosed.
