Opposition to the Nicosia historic center redevelopment plan

A committee representing shopkeepers, residents, and property owners in the historic center of Nicosia has formally rejected the municipal redevelopment plan for the Ledra and Onasagorou pedestrian streets. The committee argues that the plans, developed internally by the Nicosia Municipality, were created without prior consultation and lack an adequate budget. They claim the current proposal is insufficient, characterizing it as a rudimentary pavement repair rather than a comprehensive urban regeneration. Furthermore, the committee expresses concern regarding the protection of their businesses and quality of life during and after construction. In contrast, Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos stated that the reactions are premature, as the city's project timeline includes upcoming public consultations. He promised that these dialogues will provide a venue for stakeholders to voice their concerns. The committee asserts that they will not accept decisions that they believe could cause financial hardship or harm the historic district.
