Status of corruption investigations in Cyprus involving Giorgos Lakkotrypis and George Koumas
An investigation involving Giorgos Lakkotrypis and Charalambos Charalambou, dubbed 'videogate', began in January regarding discussions with alleged foreign investors. A private criminal investigator was appointed to the case with an initial deadline of mid-April. Following two extensions, the current deadline for the completion of the investigation is July 20th. Separately, the Anti-Corruption Authority took two years to investigate claims made in the book 'Mafia State'. Furthermore, the case of Cyprus Football Association president George Koumas regarding potential conflicts of interest in television rights, reported by journalist Fanis Makrides since 2018, faced significant delays. The Ethics and Protection of Sports Committee issued two findings in 2023, followed by a 2024 independent criminal investigation report. The matter is scheduled to proceed to court in 2026. These cases reflect ongoing public discussions regarding the speed and efficiency of anti-corruption investigations in Cyprus.
