Parliamentary committee to decide on potential waste disposal taxes by August 31

The Cypriot Parliamentary Committee on the Environment is scheduled to decide by August 31 whether to impose additional taxes on local authorities for waste sent to landfills. This measure follows state commitments made to secure European Union funding. DISY Member of Parliament Andreas Konstantinou stated that the implementation of the 'Pay As You Throw' system should have preceded such tax proposals to provide economic and environmental incentives for waste reduction. Konstantinou criticized the state for failing to implement this system, noting that local authorities lack the necessary infrastructure for organic waste processing and efficient recycling. He highlighted the Paphos district as an example where 100% of waste currently undergoes landfilling without recycling. The committee is now evaluating the consequences of these delays for municipal waste management.
