Violent clash between foreign workers in Xylofagou

On the night of Wednesday, July 8, a violent confrontation between 15 to 20 individuals occurred in the center of Xylofagou. According to police and the community leader, Giorgos Ioulianos, the participants were of Syrian origin, and the conflict reportedly stemmed from financial disputes related to the exploitation of foreign labor. Witnesses described the use of various weapons, including iron bars, crowbars, hammers, stones, and wooden sticks. A vehicle was also used in an attempt to hit individuals before it crashed into a wall. Police arrived at the scene shortly after the incident at 9:40 PM, but the suspects had already fled. Authorities seized several items as evidence, including vehicles and personal effects. By July 9, one 27-year-old suspect was arrested under a judicial warrant and was scheduled to appear before the Famagusta District Court. The investigation is ongoing to identify all participants and determine the precise circumstances of the incident.
