Balcony collapse in Limassol highlights building maintenance issues
Balconies recently collapsed at an apartment building in Limassol, Cyprus, marking the latest in a series of structural failures in the area. This event follows a fatal building collapse in the same city a few months ago that resulted in two deaths, as well as subsequent building evacuations across Cyprus. Experts and the Real Estate Development Association note that these incidents point to systemic issues regarding the management and maintenance of aging multi-unit buildings. Thousands of structures built decades ago now face significant rehabilitation needs. The association is urging the House of Representatives to prioritize the passage of the 'Management of Multi-unit Buildings and Related Matters Law of 2023'. Current legislative frameworks are described as inadequate for addressing modern building maintenance and service collection challenges. There is growing pressure on the state to implement stricter safety regulations to prevent further accidents or loss of life.
