Cyprus tests AI-powered cameras to detect mobile phone use while driving

Cyprus police have announced the installation of the island's first two stationary traffic cameras equipped with artificial intelligence. Located on Griva Digeni Avenue in the Engomi district of Nicosia, these devices will replace older, non-functional equipment. The primary objective is to curb road fatalities by monitoring drivers for mobile phone usage, which authorities identify as a major factor in half of all fatal accidents. The AI system continuously records traffic and analyzes the driver's hand position to detect smartphone use. Unlike automated systems, detected incidents are sent to police officers for verification before any fine is issued. Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades noted that some drivers continue to watch content on platforms like TikTok while behind the wheel. Currently, the project is in a pilot phase, with potential expansion to other cities and the tracking of additional traffic violations, such as failure to wear seatbelts, if successful. Additionally, authorities have increased the presence of mobile patrol cameras within city limits to enhance road safety.
