Over 5,000 heat-related deaths reported in Germany in 2026
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported that more than 5,000 deaths in Germany have been linked to extreme heat since the beginning of 2026. Specifically, 5,120 fatalities were recorded as being associated with high temperatures this year. During the week of June 22 to June 28, 4,310 heat-related deaths were documented, followed by another 800 cases reported the following week. RKI researcher Matthias an der Heiden noted that while heatstroke is a direct cause of death, most fatalities stem from a combination of preexisting conditions exacerbated by exposure to extreme heat. The institute stated that Germany is in a transition phase where heatwaves are becoming increasingly frequent. It was further highlighted that neither German buildings nor societal habits have yet adequately adapted to these climate conditions. Individuals over the age of 85 are identified as being particularly vulnerable to these heat events.
