Cyprus reaffirms support for Lebanon during high-level meetings

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides held meetings at the Presidential Palace with the Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Youssef Ratzis, on July 9, 2026. The discussions focused on reinforcing bilateral relations, with President Christodoulides prioritizing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon. The Cypriot President stated that his government is actively working within the European Union to initiate negotiations for a comprehensive strategic agreement with Lebanon, similar to those established with Jordan and Egypt. Minister Ratzis expressed gratitude for the ongoing assistance provided by the Republic of Cyprus. Additionally, during a separate ceremony at the Presidential Palace, President Christodoulides received the credentials of the new Lebanese Ambassador, Reina Charbel. He emphasized the historical ties between the two nations, citing the EEZ delimitation agreement as a model for cooperation. Both parties agreed on the potential for further expansion of ties in sectors such as energy, trade, and culture.
