Disagreement between DISY and AKEL regarding NATO and Cyprus negotiations
On Thursday, the Democratic Rally (DISY) issued a statement responding to remarks made by AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou. The dispute centers on the potential involvement of NATO in the Cyprus peace process. Stefanou stated on Wednesday that while AKEL supports UN Secretary-General Guterres' efforts to establish a negotiation framework, the party remains firmly opposed to any NATO involvement in resolving the Cyprus issue. He emphasized that any proposed solution would require AKEL's support to be viable. In response, DISY criticized AKEL for prioritizing ideological positions over national interests. The party argued that security issues and potential NATO membership should be evaluated based on the needs of the Republic of Cyprus rather than historical ideological filters. DISY concluded by stating that the country requires realism and strong international alliances to achieve reunification and move past the occupation.
