Dispute over energy security and labor issues at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) has denied claims made by the Association of Electricity Suppliers (SEPIE) regarding the security of the country's power supply. SEPIE previously expressed concern that labor disputes within the EAC could threaten continuous electricity access for citizens, hospitals, and businesses. SEPIE argued that the current centralization of power production makes the country vulnerable to internal operational or labor disruptions at the EAC. In response, the EAC stated that no labor issues have ever endangered the power supply. The authority clarified that its recent challenges relate to strategic planning and energy security rather than employer-employee disagreements. While the EAC emphasized that it opposes strikes affecting consumers, it characterized SEPIE's narrative as factually incorrect. SEPIE concluded by calling for broader energy system reforms, increased diversification, and investments to ensure future grid resilience. The two organizations remain divided on the underlying causes and the adequacy of the current national electrical system design.
