Supplier association raises concerns over power grid stability amid AHK labor disputes
The Association of Electricity Supply Representatives (SEPIE) has issued a formal statement regarding the potential threat to national power supply caused by ongoing labor disputes at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (AHK). SEPIE emphasizes that while the right to collective bargaining is a fundamental democratic principle, the uninterrupted access to electricity for households, businesses, and critical infrastructure like hospitals remains an equal priority. The association argues that the current concentration of power generation within a single entity makes the national grid highly vulnerable to internal operational, technical, or labor-related disruptions. Rather than assigning blame for the current crisis, SEPIE is calling on all involved parties to act responsibly to ensure the safety of the energy supply. Furthermore, the organization is advocating for structural reforms to improve the country's energy resilience. These proposed changes include increased investment, diversification of power generation sources, and the development of a more reliable and competitive market. The association contends that these measures are essential to modernize the power system and mitigate risks that could evolve into matters of national security.
