Discussions on the potential transfer of S-400 systems from Turkey
According to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, Ankara and Washington are currently discussing a solution to remove the Russian-made S-400 missile systems from the Turkish military arsenal. American officials reportedly view the transfer of these systems to an unnamed Gulf country as the most viable path to resolve existing bilateral tensions. This move is considered necessary by the United States to comply with legal frameworks, potentially leading to the lifting of CAATSA sanctions. The report clarifies that while removing these obstacles is a prerequisite for improving relations, it does not automatically guarantee Turkey's readmission into the F-35 fighter jet program. Previous proposals, such as storing the systems within Turkey or keeping them under joint control, were rejected by the U.S. as legally insufficient. The discussion remains focused on permanently ensuring the S-400s are no longer part of the Turkish inventory. No final agreement has been confirmed yet, but diplomatic efforts continue to address these specific military and political issues.
