Turkish F-16 operations at Ercan airport affect civilian flight schedules
The continuous presence and 24/7 readiness of Turkish F-16 fighter jets at Ercan airport have led to increased operational burdens for local air traffic controllers. According to a report by Bugun Kibris, citing Kursat Hudavéroglu, head of the air traffic controllers' union, military readiness results in occasional flight delays, rerouting, or cancellations. Data suggests that at least two F-16s take off daily, impacting 4-5 civilian flights every second day. Divergent technical landing and takeoff procedures for military versus civilian aircraft often cause arrival delays, with some civilian planes experiencing up to 30 minutes of holding time in the air. In instances where aircraft lack sufficient fuel due to these delays, they are redirected to alternative airports. While officials acknowledge these challenges, they maintain that disruptions to daily traffic flow are rare and not systemic. The runway is consistently maintained to meet military standards to ensure the fighters can launch at any time.
