Cyprus mandates full adr compliance for fuel tankers
The Cyprus Department of Road Transport has announced the full implementation of safety requirements for liquid fuel tankers. This mandate follows the Road Transport of Dangerous Goods Law (N. 29(I)/2004) and the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR). While ADR provisions became applicable to internal transport via Directive 2008/68/EC in June 2009, a recent ministerial decree (K.D.P. 249/2025, dated August 8, 2025) officially ended the transitional periods for non-compliant vehicles. Operators and owners are now required to upgrade or replace vehicles and tanks to meet strict technical specifications. Compliance includes vehicle and tank approval, specialized driver training, and mandatory safety signaling and equipment. The Department acknowledged potential economic impacts on the industry but emphasized that these measures are essential for public safety and the protection of human life. Cooperation from station owners and tanker operators is requested to ensure a timely transition.
