European Commission discusses potential modifications to the Common Fisheries Policy
On Thursday, the European Parliament plenary in Strasbourg held a session regarding the assessment of the EU's Common Fisheries Policy. European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Kostas Kadis, addressed the body, noting that the policy framework established in 2013 remains fundamentally valid. The evaluation, published in April, confirms that the current approach successfully balances environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Commissioner Kadis announced that he is considering submitting a proposal to the College of Commissioners for a targeted modification of the existing regulation. This potential update aims to improve legislation and better support small-scale fishers and sector profitability. While the report indicates progress in reducing overfishing, implementation efficiency remains a key focus. Future improvements will depend on technical conservation measures, control mechanisms, and multiannual management plans.
