Cyprus reports significant decline in illegal migration and backlog of asylum applications
Deputy Minister of Migration and Asylum Nicholas A. Ioannides briefed the House Interior Committee on the government's progress regarding migration management. Official statistics show a 92% decrease in illegal arrivals during the first half of 2026 compared to 2022. The number of pending asylum applications has been reduced from 35,000 three years ago to 13,500 today, representing an 86% decrease. Approximately 35,000 third-country nationals have departed since the current government took office. Specifically regarding Syrian nationals, 5,200 have returned home voluntarily, while 2,000 withdrew their applications. Current data indicates 200,000 foreign nationals reside legally in Cyprus, with 30,000 holding asylum status. The Ministry is utilizing enhanced surveillance, including drones and cameras, along the Green Line to counter trafficking. Additionally, the government has launched a family repatriation scheme and continues to integrate the EU’s new Migration and Asylum Pact into local policy.
