Status of the EU Entry/Exit System at Cypriot airports
The European Union's new Entry/Exit System (EES) has become operational across 29 Schengen area countries, requiring non-EU nationals to provide biometric data including facial images and fingerprints. While the system aims to enhance security, its implementation has reportedly led to significant delays and long queues at several European airports. Cyprus, along with Ireland, remains outside the Schengen zone and has not yet implemented the EES, meaning traditional passport checks persist at its airports. Consequently, Cyprus is currently not experiencing the travel disruptions reported elsewhere in Europe. UK citizens, who constitute the largest tourist market for Cyprus, are subject to EES checks in Schengen countries but remain exempt for now when flying to Cyprus. Cypriot authorities are monitoring the situation as part of the country's ongoing process to join the Schengen zone. Once Cyprus adopts the system, officials anticipate increased pressure on its airport infrastructure, particularly regarding travelers from non-EU nations like the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
